Teaching Tip #164

Teacherscribe’s Teaching Tip #164
What lesson could you sell tickets for?  Or what lesson do students love the most? Part 2
I posed this question to half a dozen former students in the fall.  I thought they’d all mention the one that was my choice for the one lesson that I could sell tickets for.  But I actually got four different answers.  I hope that’s a good thing.
Elle shared that her favorite assignment was the Multi-Genre Research Paper from College Comp 2.  She chose an amazing topic: watching all the Star Wars films in order for the first time and writing down her opinion of the franchise.
For this assignment, students can choose any subject they like or are interested in.  Then they have to research it and present their findings in at least four different genres (journals, research, reviews, social media, poetry, art, dance, speech . . .).

The topics have been amazing – from a student creating a slideshow illustrating his bad ass baseball card collection to a student’s remembrance of her father who passed away shortly after she was born to a student sharing what it was like to be born with a cleft pallete and his struggle to overcome it to a student sharing his grandfather’s battle with alcoholism to a student sharing his guide to men’s fashion and style to a student chronicling her family’s passion for travel.
