Teaching Tip #42

Teacherscribe’s Teaching Tip #42

Another book that really impacted my teaching last year was Carmine Gallo’s Talk Like TED: The 9 Public Speaking Secrets of the Worlds’ Top Minds.

Tip #8 - Paint a mental picture with multi sensory experiences.

Use the tools that our students have with them every day.  I’m all for lecturing.  But don’t simply talk.  Show a video.  Have students look up terms and dates and events on line.  Have them evaluate websites for reliability.  Use social media.  Play a song . . .

Our students don’t just encounter the world as we did.  They grow up in the most stimulating environment known to man.  Then they come to high school and (for the most part) are told to be quite and sit down and listen.  No wonder “ADHD” is rampant.  I’d be fidgety too!

Use all the tools at your disposal to make your lessons and materials engaging.  It’s not like you have to do it every single period.  It’s not like YOU have to do it at all.

You can task your kids with presenting the material to their peers in a multi-media format.
