Today's Reads, Views, and Links

There is nothing called 'privacy' anymore.  But there is common sense.  This guy obviously neglects that.

The tip is simple: if you want to keep your job (and in this economy that's an excellent idea), don't Tweet negatively about your workplace or customers.

And I love the twist at the end.  No one comes out of this looking particularly good.

Remember too, if you're a business, everything you do is open to criticism and judgement.  This story is a great example of both sides.

We are always under the microscope.

Though Michelle Rhee has been a lightning rod for education reform, no one is willing to publish this story (an op-ed piece) by the esteemed John Merrow.  I wonder why?

One editor mentioned that Rhee is no longer a national news item.  Then why was she on Oprah not that long ago?

The fact is this - her reforms didn't work.

Yes, she fired a lot of incompetent teachers and principals.  But she promised sharp increases in test scores.  And - shocker - they went up.  But then there were a lot of test booklets that had a large wrong-to-right erasure percentage.  Far more than was common.

Did Rhee investigate with the same vigor she did to get rid of teachers and principals?  Nope.

When measures were taken to prevent "cheating," guess what happened to the test scores? They plummeted.

And worse yet, the Washington DC schools are worse off than before she arrived.

The bottom line is this - if you don't care passionately about kids and connect with them, you're not going to make an impact on their lives.  You can have the best test-prep and cookie cutter curriculum at your disposal, but it won't matter.

Unfortunately, there's no real way to test that nor to ensure that teachers who are hired love kids and will do whatever it takes to connect with them.

But it's much easier to bring in yes-teachers who can deliver the curriculum and never make an impact. And the tests will prove this - more failing scores.

This should get people fired up to come back to school.
