Friday's Hike

Kenz, Cash, and I drove to what Kenzie calls "the woods" in TRF (over by the new bridge, kind of over by Lover's Lane).  There is a series of trails that are great for hiking.  (In fact, I think I'm going to use these when we read "Young Goodman Brown" in College Comp II.  Ahead of time, I'm going to go down there and set up props along the trail and have students walk throughout the woods - just like Goodman Brown in the story).

Things were a little sketchy when we pulled up and saw the vandalism to one of the stops.  I couldn't help but think (and Tweet) - "The litmus test for being a loser is if you ever put 4:20 or a pot leaf on anything."  I mean, seriously, what hope does one have in life by doing such disgusting things to public property?

Despite the vulgar defacing of public property, Kenz and Cash were full go on the paths.  Kenz and Cash quickly scampered ahead of me in search of walking sticks.  Then Kenz was obsessed with keeping an eye out for Poison Ivy.  Cash was fascinated with the river - as one of the paths we took wound close to the river - and throwing sticks into it.

We had a great half hour hike.  Then we saw this stump.  The Dad in me had to put the kids on top for a photo opp (though Kenz wasn't keen on actually sitting on the stump).  I was a bit worried about anything nesting inside the trunk.  But after kicking it a couple times - with the kids behind me at a safe distance - I deemed it safe and had them hop up.

Usually August is hot and muggy.  If that were the case, the trails would be the last place we'd venture since we'd have been sucked dry by the mosquitoes, but since it was a crisp 55 degrees, we had to don sweatshirts.  But it sure kept the bugs away.

The best part, though, was when Kenz stopped to examine a suspicious looking plant to see if it was poison ivy, I spotted something in the grass.  It was a 20 dollar bill!

When Kristie came home for lunch, Kenz asked, "Mom, want to go to McDonald's?"  Then she grinned and held out the crumpled 20 and said, "It's on me!"

Next up - hiking Dead Man's Trail over by the college.
