Tobias, a student of mine, sent this story and blog my way knowing how much I would love it.
He was totally correct.
The blog is titled Never Seconds.
What a brilliant idea. The student keeps a running check on her school cafeteria. Using the power of the flat world, namely her blog, she is able to enact change. Plus, she is able to post pictures that other students, many from the US, have sent her of their school lunches.
She chronicles the nutritional information and other statistics on the food.
Now, if a 9 year old can do this on her school lunch, what can our students do with blogs?
I'd would love to see a student take a look at education reform. What passes for bad education practice in their school day. Why not capture it and keep it on a blog. Then have others contribute their own examples from their schools.
Likewise, students could chronicle the best and most effective practices or lessons they have encountered.
What a wealth of information that would be.
And it'd be scary as hell too. But it would enact change.
Just ask yourself this question: what would students put up on a blog about you and your classroom?
