That ¨ˆµ©ƒ∆∂ firewall!

So, instead of seeing the wall wisher feature that is displayed in the blog post below this one - a site that allows students to interact and leave feedback to questions I post - they see this wonderful picture instead.

Oh, firewall. How I've missed thee! Thanks for blocking out my wall wisher site which allows my students to leave feedback on a virtual wall from their cell phones or computers. Well, any computers but the ones in school that is.

Gotta love those firewalls! I went to a technology conference last week and the keynote made the comment that "we act like the secrets to the world are hidden inside a 7th graders laptop" in regards to the ridiculous firewalls and blocked applications in schools.

Ditto, Reynolds. The firewall on the school computers is such an inconvenience. I drives me up the wall, no pun intended.

Another "benefit" is that my Spanish students cannot access audio activities or streaming videos that are an integral part of our instructional materials.

I hated that firewall so much. Some of the things they blocked were legitimate, but other sites were not. My brother was doing a report on firearms, and he had all sorts of trouble finding any pictures, because they were all filtered. He couldn't even get onto the Winchester site.

It would be interesting to chart what sites students went on the last month or so that the entire school was free of the filter. Did any really got to porn sites? How many spent time on Twitter or Facebook or Youtube (which they can any time via the cell phones anyway)?

Then balance that with how much time was spent on legit sources. I know we were working on our "Young Goodman Brown" and Training Day (you'll remember that paper Michael D). Some students wanted to discuss scenes. I told them to go to youtube and see what was there. Sure enough, youtube had several of the key scenes that they wanted to watch.

Now, I'll be the first to say we are blessed with the equipment and number of labs we have. But regardless, that firewall needs to go.

I did some checking while waiting for the Choir concert to start on Saturday, and it looks like they've done an okay job of loosening the restrictions. Your blog is no longer blocked, although for some reason the Captcha for posting comments on here was not let through. I also noticed that a lot of the Wikileaks sites are blocked for some reason, which is unfortunate for people that are looking into current events. All in all, better than last year, but still has some room for improvement.
