Here is one of my new favorite authors, who unfortunately died several years ago, Neil Postman. Just finished his The End of Education last night, and it blew me away.
I have to re-read it.
I also need to start on the other book from Postman that I have called Amusing Ourselves to Death.
Here is Postman talking about why doctors and lawyers tend to be more effective with their clientele than teachers are with theirs. Doctors don't focus on health; lawyers don't focus on justice. Rather, doctors focus on sickness and lawyers focus on injustice.
He posits that instead of trying to make students intelligent, teachers should focus on combating stupidity instead.
