College Football

Outside of school starting and Kenzie's birthday, the college football season is the best thing about fall in my book.

And it starts right away. Number 20 BYU knocked of number 3 Oklahoma today. Sure Oklahoma's starting quarterback was hurt, but what a win for a program that has struggled for respect since Steve Young, Jim McMahon, and Ty Detmer played there.

Boise State also won a huge game against Oregon on Thursday night.

The great thing about college football is that one loss can ruin a season. If Florida and Texas go undefeated, then Oklahoma - with only one loss - would be done.

Every week is a playoff in college football. That is until the BCS wakes up and actually gets a clue and has a real playoff. But that would put a damper on the importance of every single game . . . and that is what has happened to the NFL. I mean the Cards at 9-7 almost won the Super Bowl!

In college football if you aren't 11-1 or 12-0, you are left out in the cold.

Now would I love to see an underdog with one or two losses, slug its way to a national championship (like USC or Texas could very well have done last year) if there were a playoff system in place - sure! But there's nothing like that electricity in the fall when you know just one loss and can ruin everything. Or one big upset - like what Boise and BYU have done - could lead to a Cinderella season and set them up for a 12-0 run at the national championship.
