Apathy

What a difference four days makes. I went from almost total student apathy at the ALC to working with a group of mostly high school English teachers motivated to improving how they teach reading and writing.

This morning I'm finishing up grades at the ALC. One student - whom I've had in Comp I - just failed Accessing Information, despite only missing one class period! All she had to do was write a short research assignment (using MLA format) and present on it. I (and my sub for the final week) gave the class PLENTY of time (too much really) to find their sources, evaluate them, and write a report. So I am grading them now. This student's happens to be all of three paragraphs - with no works cited or in-text documentation at all. I had to write on it - though she won't see it - "No wonder you ended up here! What work ethic! Stay off myspace and facebook and work. Again, it's no shock you ended up in summer school - and still managed to fail!" Apathy sucks.
