Teaching Thought #3
What is it that we do that
students really like?
This is another question I posed a group of students at
dinner during the choir trip to San Francisco.
Here were their responses – They like when we give them work
time in class because many of them are incredibly busy outside of school. They like when teachers take time to get to
know students individually. They like
when teachers use formative assessments to ensure students are
understanding. They love when teachers
make a presentation interesting, as opposed to just reading through boring old
slides. They also love it when teachers
find a fresh or new way to present the information to students. They love it when routine is broken up and
you don’t just do the same thing every single class period. Students like when we can connect topics to
what is going on in our everyday lives.
Food for thought.
