Teaching Thought #19
In prepping for my UND Teaching and Learning 250 class a few years ago, I came across this interesting read, Ten Things Teachers Should Unlearn – I revisit it before every school year.
Fourth thing teachers should unlearn: Students are obliged to respect teachers
This one is touchy. I have had a lot of colleagues question this one. And I can see why. I try and view this item as students should respect teachers (or everyone else, for that matter), but remember that respect is a two-way street. What is the saying, respect is earned?
Parenting and society has shifted enough where students don’t walk in anymore and feel compelled to respect their elders. If nothing else, keep that in mind when you’re teaching and it will save you headaches. I simply try to earn their respect from day one by showing I care, by treating them with respect, and, above all, showing them how the skills they’ll gain in my class will benefit them immediately.
