There are two entries today. And both have to do with education.
The first is this absolutely ridiculous story about the high school valedictorian who is not being given her diploma because she said the word "hell" during her speech.
Nothing good can come of this. First, the school and its administration are being petty. Second, they are looking foolish for neither screening her speech nor having a policy in place to handle such an issue.
This is one reason the graduation seniors two years ago who did a stupid prank the night before graduation got away with basically slap on the wrist. Many of us wanted the book thrown at the few meatheads who pulled the stunt. But administration (wisely) decided upon the slap on the wrist . . . with the acknowledgement that there would be a rule in place in the student handbook that would address this issue. From now on, if it happens again, the students in question will not graduate. The reason the administration didn't throw the book at them in the first place was that there was no policy in place. As our assistant principal said, having the students not walk at graduation might not be that big of a thing to them, but it would be huge to parents and grandparents who travelled to be with them. I can agree with that.
This school district should have had a policy like that in place. Then if she does use a word that they deem inappropriate, no problem. But to hold her diploma and not have the guts to let her know ahead of time and to demand an apology is pretty pathetic on their part. If you ask me.
I thought that story was the dumbest one I could come across, until I saw this one. A school in Ohio forces an elementary school boy to hide the message on his shirt. Is it a Playboy bunny? No. Is it an inappropriate saying (such as the slogan "I have a dick so I make the rules," which I actually saw on a father at McDonald's and on another father smiling with his daughter after her graduation in a Facebook!)? No. Is it a t-shirt with nudity on it? No.
What is this vile t-shirt that had to be covered up? A t-shirt that simply had the Michigan football logo with the words "Go Big Blue."
That might be the stupidest thing I've heard in a long time. It's just sad that such an act of stupidity is also associated with a school.
