Took Friday off to get some work done around the house. I have to run our patio furniture to storage at Gail's in Mayville. With Casey's truck and the roads, that should take up a good part of my day.
It's nice too to get away from school and the bad vibes there.
The kids are great though. I was gone on Wednesday for Common Prep, and my juniors in first block were nuts when I got back.
Where were you? What were you doing? How'd it go? How's your daughter? What's going on today?
They were loaded with questions. It was a good time to let the guard down a bit and just talk with the kids. They didn't get a lot accomplished, but they saw a more personal side of me.
I told them - as part of an introduction into the second chapter of Fahrenheit 451 - some stories about my father. They shared some of their own stories.
Soon they were helping put up my Christmas decorations and totally off track.
I let them stay that way. They deserved a little break. Though I have to admit, quite a few were into their novels and just read right through. I got out of the way.

And I'm not going to lie. It's nice to get away from the storm of controversy around the book.
And I'm hardly involved! I don't envy administration or the teachers who taught the book who have been slandered.
We did receive a personal email from the mother that started all of this. I didn't read it though. I might next week.
A final thought. You know if parents don't trust me to decide what to teach their kids, then why do they trust me to write a letter of recommendation for them?
