Teaching Tip #1 (Inservice Week)

Teacherscribe’s Teaching Tip #1

Here are some tips to make it remarkable for your students.

  1. Smile.  Gary Vaynerchuk swears that everything he has accomplished is due to his ability to smile, no matter what.  I don’t think you can easily dismiss the importance of this for teachers . . . at any level.  What better way to show kids several things than smile?  It shows that you are actually happy to be back?  And if you aren’t happy to be back, what the hell are you doing in school? You’re stealing a paycheck.  Shame on you.  And if you aren’t happy to be back, how can you expect your kids to be happy to be there?  Smile your damn ass off.
  2. Dress up.  The article says this is optional, but I don’t think it is.  Set the tone right away.  This is a special day.  It’s the best day of the year!!!!  Act and dress like it.
  3. Be prepared.  You might not be ready for the second day of school (and I’m with you on that), but nail it on the first day.  Have your ducks in a row and wow the hell out of your kids.  Set the tone right away.  Ask a coach just how important the first practice is and you’ll see what I mean.  It won’t go perfectly, but it’s so vital to set the tone right away.
  4. Develop expectations.  I try and let the students develop their own . . . we even try to develop our own core values.  Getting students to buy in right away is so vital.  Now this doesn’t mean just going over your syllabus, which is maybe the most boring thing you can do on the first day.  Who is engaged by that?  Think back to your days in college.  You know you hated when the professor just went over the syllabus and droned on.  In fact, I bet you loved the first day of class in college because many professors just went over the syllabus and then dismissed class early.  You know your kids would love that.  So give them a reason to love staying in your class.  Challenge accepted!
