Teaching Tip #33

Teacherscribe’s Teaching Tip #33
The Trouble with textbooks.
I’m stealing this from a book I read this summer for a graduate course on teaching reading in the content areas: Subjects Matter by Harvey “Smokey” Daniels and Steven Zemelman.
Trouble #4 – textbooks are authoritarian.
The problem is that some school districts have all their textbooks produced by one company!
There are really three textbook companies left: Pearson, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and Glencoe and McGraw.  Those are three companies controlling what is taught – even, perhaps, thought, by a generation of American school kids.

That is if teacher aren’t encouraged to supplement their texts.
