Teacher Tip #9

Speaking of letting your freak flag fly, give serious thought to your room setup.

Try this little experiment - walk into any elementary school classroom.  You don’t want to leave.  There are so many cool things hanging on the wall.  There are so many cool things for you to play with or create.  You just don’t want to leave.

Now walk into your room.  Do you get the same vibes?

If not, why?  If you’re not fired up to learn in your room, how can your students hope to be?

But it’s not my job to entertain the students, you say.  It’s my job to teach them.  They should walk in my room prepared to learn.

Fair enough.  I have one question for you: what world are you living in?

Atmosphere matters.  It matters in building culture.

Just spend 30 minutes in a Wal-Mart and contrast that with spending 30 minutes in Pier One.  They’re both stores, but they are light years apart when it comes to atmosphere and culture and your experience.

Atmosphere matters.  What kind of experience is your room offering your kids when they walk in?
