The World is a Fine Place and Worth Fighting For

That is a line of Hemingway, and it is also the title of one of my favorite boards on my Pinterest account.  Every time I see a story that restores my faith in humanity, I post it there.

Just today at lunch we saw a news report about a woman driving her SUV into the surf screaming about demons.  Now if she were alone, that likely wouldn't have made the news.

But as the story unfolded, we saw lifeguards on the beach run toward the SUV to help. Then we saw a young child dangle from the window screaming for help.

One lifeguard, who ran to help, revealed that he saw two young children and held one in each arm as he hauled them to safety.  Just before pulling them free though, he noticed another child in a car seat in the back of the SUV.

"I wish I had three arms," the man said.

Luckily, all three were saved.  As was their pregnant mother.

Thankfully, everyone in this story was saved.  But it easily could have been much, much worse.

As I thought about how heroic the lifeguards were, I thought about how too often all we ever see on the news is death and violence and hate.

That is one reason, I try to pin something to my "The World is a Fine Place and Worth Fighting For" page at least once a week.

The last couple on the news though, has provided plenty of material.  This is rare.  The good news is out there.  You just have to scour beyond the headlines for it.

Here a Domino's pizza delivery guy helps save a life.

Here a 7 year old cancer patient gets an amazing surprise on his birthday.

Here a little boy in Brazil storms the soccer field and is hoisted high.

Here high school students rally to help a beloved math teacher suffering from cancer.

Here a woman pulls over to give her baby nephew mouth to mouth when she noticed he was unconscious.

Faith in humanity, restored.
