Running

For the better part of a month now, I've been running seriously.  By seriously I mean trying to log at least one mile a day, though for the past ten days or so, I've been able to make it two miles.

Let me tell you, though, running at 39 is not like it was when I was 29, which, by the way, was the last time I ran seriously.

Back then I used to take ephedrine to help with my asthma - actually, I took it because it was a great stimulant.

But since that's been outlawed (I believe too many people were dying of heart attacks as a cause), I now take Advil to help - not to stimulate me - but to help drown out the aches and pains!

When I start my run, my left hamstring aches.  By the time that feels fine, my right knee starts to throb!  Oh, the joys of old age.

But I've been sticking it out. And despite some aches and pains, I still look forward to my evening run.

The only discouraging part is that the two miles I log in my entire run now used to be just a warm up job when I was running hardcore in my mid twenties when I routinely ran 8 miles a night.

One thing that has been much better though 10 years late is the technology.  I used to cradle my Walkman as I ran.  Now I just need my iPhone, which has a great running app.

It logs my route, calories, pace, and distance.  A female voice even chimes in over my playlist to notify me every half mile of my pace and distance.

Even one night when I had taken some time off, it sent a message to my phones asking me if I had forgotten about my workout plan since it had been a couple days since I last worked out.

It even guilts me into working out!

Here is what the final workout screen looks like

So far I haven't had a significant weight loss, but I'm eating healthier and if I keep burning off close to 400 calories four or five times a week, good things will sooner or later happen!

What's the app?

The app is called Runkeeper. It's free on the App Store
