Some Fiction Reading

I've had some down time between readings, so I delved into my first fiction book in quite some time.  It was excellent.  It was Breed by Chase Novak.  The plot is insane: a yuppie couple have it all, except kids.  They try all the medical methods.  They try counseling.  They try shrinks and psychics and changing their diets.  No kids.  Then the husband hears of a rogue doctor in Sri Lanka who has been able to work wonders with many of his rich co-workers.

So the husband and wife fly off and have their treatments.  With immediate results.  But the results aren't just in terms of pregnancy.  There is radical hair growth.  Vivid dreams.  Increased physical prowess.  And a desperate hunger.

What the couple doesn't realize is that the rogue doctor took DNA from some of the most ravenous predators on earth.  Including the wolf.  And the Goby fish.

Now the problem with the former?  The procedure is slowly turning Mom and Dad into werewolves.  The problem with the latter?  The Goby fish is infamous for eating its young.

So when the wife delivers twins . . . they are kept locked away in their rooms.  For their own safety.

And that's the reason why the children are so desperate to escape.

And they do.  And despite all that I've just told you, when the kids escape, that's when the novel really gets interesting!

After devouring Breed (pun intended.  Sorry) in two nights, I decided to read a story I had downloaded to my computer a long time ago: The Man Who Drew Cats by Michael Marshal Smith.  I came across the story when I was doing research of the Bram Stoker Awards (basically the Grammys for horror fiction).  I saw that "The Man Who Drew Cats," which happens to be Smith's very first published story, was available on line and didn't hesitate to down load it.

And now that I've finally read it, man is that a great horror story.  It's part Stephen King with the small town dialects, but when it get rolling, man is it great.

But alas, my two newest books are on their way, The Icarus Deception and Creating Innovators, are on their way and I can't wait.
