Barry Schwartz has lamented our loss of wisdom (see the TED Talk below), but this story (about a public employee who was fired after refusing to come back from unpaid leave to care for his dying wife (she had suffered 19 months of brain cancer) - and just wait until you read what happened to the man they hired to replace him!) illustrates our true loss of not only wisdom but compassion.
