Listening to a PBS broadcast "The Open Mind," featuring Leon Botstein, caused me to discover a new analogy that gets at why I think high stakes testing is such a tragedy for our students.
Having students study and memorize information to be regurgitated on a test - and then also wasting copious amounts of school time 'learning' test taking skills, is just like taking a baseball player and instead of practicing and judging them on how they do in an actual game, you give them a written test prior to the game.
You tell me what kind of sense that makes? Especially if you have ever played baseball or loved the game!
