The Biggest Scam Going

I'm going to go a little Phyllis Schlafly here and rant on a conspiracy theory here of big government and prescription drug companies.

One in ten American kids have ADHD. Yeah, right.

Why is this stupid?

First, if 10 percent of all kids in our country (and that number is well into the millions I'm sure) is on medication to treat ADHD, then gee wouldn't anyone think that it's an absolute jackpot for the drug companies? Doesn't this cause any red flags to go up for anyone?

Second, doesn't anyone question the validity of this line --

"Regardless of what's undergirding this, we know more parents are telling us their children have ADHD," Visser said.

Since when are parents medical experts? Maybe we as parents just need to do a better job raising our kids.

And by the way, I'd be worried if my kid paid too much attention. My God. Kids live in a constant state of wonder and awe. Let them be in it. Don't medicate them out of it.

Third, we (and not just kids) live in the most stimulating environment in the world's history. Why punish the kid because other things (namely school or work) isn't as exciting as the rest of their world. Is that their fault?

Here is an example.

Just yesterday I asked a student about the tiny laptop she brought to class. She said it was her father's. He bought it to use in the tractor.

What?

Yep, that's right. While the GPS guides the tractor, he works via his laptop.

When I was a kid, I pointed the smokestack of our 730 at an object on the horizon and tried to keep it trained on that while I listened to Metallica on my Walkman. Did I daydream and lose myself in my imagination? Of course! That's part of being a kid!

But the world is totally different today than it was 25 years ago!

Here is an excellent take on ADHD and how it's a rip off.

Sir Ken Robinson is totally correct. A false plague of ADHD.

As Robinson argues, it is a medical condition. But ten percent of our kids?

If you can't or don't bother to watch the video - here is his point -

When he was a boy, tonsils were taken out at an incredible rate (I was part of this too! Our first doctor was dead set against me getting them out, despite my constant bouts with tonsillitis. Our next doctor didn't hesitate to have them cut out - and my adenoids too).

Now, kids rarely have them taken out. The shift in practice has changed. It was a 'false epidemic' and just easier to have them cut out that endure the constant pain.

But times change.

Robinson believes that ADHD is our new 'false plague.' And I quite agree.
