Signs of fall

Believe it or not, the signs of fall are already here.

I couldn't help but notice the golden grain fields popping out among the greenery as I drove to work. From my youth that was the surest sign of the end of summer. Now, this was because my father tended to get his crops in later than the other farmers (not only did he drive truck as his main job but he also didn't exactly have the most modern equipment so the fact that he was able to farm at all seems quite miraculous to me now).

Kristie and I have talked about moving to a different region. Most of her family lives in Denver. They love it there, but when we visited I just didn't like the idea of the mountains always surrounding me. Life in a big city isn't for me either. As much as I might take the fields and small towns for granted, there's something I'd definitely miss if I were surrounded by nothing but steel, glass, and asphalt all the time.

Soon football will start. In fact, training camps open this week and the first preseason game is just 12 days away.

Then inservice will begin. There's the traditions of back to school shopping and a Labor Day trip. And then, best of all, school will start.

It won't take long after that for those great cool breezes to start. Then the leaves will turn and we'll have the best time of the year for about a month. Maybe we'll catch a break and have a warm fall like last year. I'm getting ready now to soak it all up when it finally comes.
