Moving Moving up

Last month I was asked to move up to a junior varsity position in Coach Mumm’s football program.

I could have thrown my hat in the ring last year when another JV coach retired, but it seems to be such a commitment. And my 9th grade position is about as cushy as it gets.

But Mumm has a chance to bring some veteran coaches into the fold for the 9th graders, so I opted to move up.

If it weren’t for Coach Mumm, I think I’d have just resigned. But Mummer runs the classiest and best program in the outstate region. I mean what other coaches dare send a questionnaire home to parents asking for ways they could improve their program? And then share the cumulative results - positive and negative - with everyone (coaches, players, and parents) at the annual fall parents/players meeting. Get out of here!

What other program brings cleaning equipment to actually clean the locker room when they are done with it? None that I know of and certainly no others that I’ve ever been a part of.

What other programs have such a strong bonding experience among the juniors and seniors (and in fact the entire team) with such things as the senior trip to a Gophers game, paint balling, the offensive line coach having the ‘hogs’ over for supper and a movie once a week, Mumm taking his captains out to eat and listening to them and molding them into young men, the seniors banquet night in the spring that is phenomenal, his “seniors take a freshman for pizza” day, and the list goes on and on and on.

It will be an honor to assume a bigger role in that program.

Congratualtions, Kurt! This sounds like a position where you can help to make a real impact on kids as people, not just as players. Of course, I suspect you did just that with your current position.

Is it just me thinking in stereotypes, or is it unusual for an English/composition teacher to be a football coach?

Good luck in your new coaching job!

EDK,

Thanks. I never really thought about the number of English/composition teachers as coaches. But I think they are a minority.

I'm really looking forward to the opportunity.

Thanks for all the comments!
