This is a Flat World

In College Comp the students have been clamoring for more time to work on their Comparison essays which are due on Monday. I gave them today to work. As they began asking questions and as I began explaining the format I wanted the paper in, I realized that we could all learn a lot more if I had them bring drafts in on Monday and pushed the deadline back to Tuesday.

There was an audible sigh of relief.

I dispersed them to work on it. Several went down to one of labs in the media center. Several others remained in the room to work. These were the diehards, the ones who need me to read every sentence after they have just written it. So I was swamped helping them out.

When I had a bit of a breather, I noticed an email from our media specialist. She stated that the students that came down better not give me any song and dance about not having enough time to work on their papers because they were not being production. Better yet, she sent me a jpeg that was a composite of all of their computer screens . . . along with their names right at the bottom of each screen capture. Only one of the six had their paper up. The rest were gaming and wasting their time.

That was only half the fun, though.

I also had the cell phone numbers of several of these students. I quickly dispatched texts to them stating that they should knock it off and get to work and that if that have that much time to waste, their papers can be due on Monday. Those students who I didn't have numbers for, luckily, have befriended me on facebook. So I sent them private messages with the jpeg attached - also notifying them that their papers will be due on Monday.

Now that is education in a flat world.
