The wall I've hit it. The papers are piling up, and I find myself doing anything else instead of correcting them. Could I have corrector's block? It's not like I don't find them interesting. I've just hit my wall. Here's why – My College Comp class has 21 writers in it. They just turned in their seventh theme. On average there are at least two versions of each theme (some more, some less). So do the math and that's 294 essays I've read. My College Comp II class has 29 writers in it. They have finished their sixth theme. Since this is mostly research based writing, they have not written as many versions, but they have all done several drafts that I've poured over. Even without the drafts, that's still 174 essays. In my Lit & language 11 class, I have 28 writers, and they have written around 4 serious essays. So that's another 112. Total number of essays read second semester: 580. Divide that by 90 days (18 weeks in a semester) and that means I've averaged 6.4 essays a day. I know. That's my job. I'm paid to do that. I'm not complaining. I love reading what these students think and have to say. I'm just saying that I've hit a wall. And I'm not even going to do that math from last semester when I had two sections of College Comp and they wrote several essays for each topic before selecting one to develp into a final draft. I need to refresh and step away from them for awhile and come back with a fresh and re-energized perspective. Otherwise, I won't be doing anyone any good at all. |
