I was hesitant about starting the multi-genre paper with my College Comp II class.
How wrong I was.
They have been brilliant so far. In fact, last night I read what is maybe the best student essays I've ever read. The writer chose to focus on 'military men,' specifically some she knew and had grown up with who joined the guard and were shipped off to Iraq. She brought in interviews, song lyrics, personal essays, descriptive essays, photos, and an obituary for one of the soldiers who was killed. Brilliant.
While that one was the best so far, most of the others have been superb. I think what has worked so well is that the assignment gave student more freedom over topic selection and format than they have ever had. Of course, these are the best writers in the senior class, so I expected them to be good.
I just never expected them to be so moving.
This is what writing is all about.
