Barb and Matt stopped over last night to have us sign an amendment to the gravel lease.
Since we are a family that loves to visit and tell stories, a few minutes quickly stretched into an hour and a half.
At one point, Kristie and I began disputing who actually called and put the bid in on our house. I remember doing it. I was standing in the kitchen of our former house right in front of the fridge. However, Kristie, for some reason, also recalls calling and putting in a bid.
I have one word: “Susan.”
Kristie gets more like my mother every single day. I swear.
Of course, as we began to argue, Kristie claimed that I was getting more like my father every day.
Barb just stood back and smiled as we bickered, just like Mom and Dad used to.
This repeated itself this morning.
I stopped by Kristie’s work to drop off some batteries and an extension cord.
As I pulled up, I saw the Ken’s Electric truck in one of the prime parking spots. One of my classmates (and a good friend) happens to work for Ken’s Electric. Before I realized it, this thought popped into my mind: Leave it up to Buff (my friend and classmate) to hog the best parking spot.
That is the exact thing my father would have thought.
After dropping off the batteries and extension cord, I was pulling out and Buff happened to walk out and flag me down.
As we began giving each other a hard time and talking over things, I knew that we were talking the exact way our fathers would have (and used to talk all the time). Oddly enough, the loss of our parents paralleled each other. First Buff lost his mom. Then mine passed. Next, his father died. Soon after, my father died. We will always have this unspoken tie.
But for a brief moment today, our fathers lived and spoke through us.

The "for some reason" Kristie recalls putting in the bid is because she did just that. The one thing God blessed me with is a memory (I would have preferred a great singing voice) but this is my gift and I recall sitting in our bedroom, calling Carrie, the owner, and her verifying that our bid did not include the fridge and stove, that we did already have financial approval and that she would talk it over with her husband.
What you were actually doing in the kitchen was probably ordering a pizza!! :)
As I recall, it was a large pepperoni. Deep dish. With an order of breadsticks.
