New Year

Kristie and I spent our New Year's Eve with Lon and Sara -- and their daughters Rhylee (almost two and a half) and Kennedy (five months). Sara made supper and we brought beer and wine.

We had planned to play some games, but we just ended up sitting around and visiting, something we don't do much anymore because of our kids.

Watching them with Rhylee and Kennedy was amazing. Kristie brought it up too - they are a marvel of organization. Every night at 8 the kids take their bath. Then Lon puts Kennedy to bed while Sara fixes Rhylee a shake before bed. Then when Lon returns, Sara puts Kennedy to bed. The rest of the night is spent within ear shot of the baby monitor. They paid attention to that monitor the way my students pay attention to their cell phones. It was a nice change.

Kristie and I seem to be the opposite of organization. We can hardly find time to sit down and eat a meal together at the table. Usually our meals entail grabbing a slice of pizza or a quick sandwich from home before hurrying off to a basketball game. And it really doesn't change much throughout the year. The fall is packed with football and volleyball practices and games. Winter is basketball. Spring means golf and softball. When life should slow to a crawl in the summer, it really is even more hectic with Casey's work and paintballing and KoKo's insane summer rec and sports excell schedules.

Maybe we need a baby to slow things down?

Oh my! I made the funniest noise when you ended on the baby note! Ours just turned one last month and I swear she is the last! She's super good but never, ever, ever slows down. My husband and I joke that she is our chaperone. Although we have definitely become much more "homebodyish" since she came along--but I don't recommend it as a method of slowing down. hahaha.
