Remind me to do this next year

I'm taking off the first Monday after prom. What the hell is the use of listening to a large portion of the student body recount their drunken activities? God forbid, someone might want to actually learn something.

This shouldn't surprise me. It happens every year. It always will. That's just the culture here. Graduation is even worse. But thankfully summer arrives and we don't have to listen to any drunken graduation stories.

Am I becoming one of those cranky teachers? I don't know. Maybe I am. Or maybe I'm just getting tired of this type of mentality - and tired of how nothing changes.

Scott, a former Comp I, Comp II, Science Fiction, and Brit Lit student of mine, stopped by. He is apparently done with college. He was off attending a BYU prep school. Scott, ever the showman and one helluva pianist, came in like he hasn't missed a day. He wanted to know how classes were going, when the wedding was, what we'd been reading in Science Fiction, and if I missed his writing. Now what's not to like about that?

As a Mormon, Scott is going on his mission this fall. He is hoping to spend two years in the Philippines. What a world Scott has in front of him. I wished him the best of luck.

His enthusiasm and passion were a nice break from the redneck drunk stories from earlier in the day.
