Myrtle

Two days ago I showed a colleague an old picture (1967) of the Knox elementary school staff. My grandmother is in it and so is the colleague's husband. I believe it was his first year teaching. I asked her if her husband would mind writing down any memories or stories he had about my grandmother.

This is part of his response --

"The first thing that comes to my mind about Myrtle is that she was a lady, a very nice looking, silver haired lady. She was an excellent Kindergarten teacher and a wonderful person. She also had a very good sense of humor, which was very necessary in her profession . . . "

"Through our Sunshine Committee, a cake was purchased [for Myrtle's 65th birthday] and we had a little party for her in the staff room. One of her students saw all the decorations, cards, etc., and asked her what was going on. She politely answered that it was someone's birthday. Naturally, the little five year old wanted to know whose birthday it was. Myrtle answered, 'Well, if you really want to know, it's mine.' 'Really, Mrs. Baril!' And then came the loaded question, 'how old are you?' Myrtle slyly answered, 'Oh, at least one hundred!' And then came the loaded reply when the student said, 'Ah, you're older than that!' I'll never forget Myrtle's comment to the staff when she told the story. She said, 'I could have wrung his little neck!' We had many good chuckles about that, as you can imagine."
